The female kangaroos are dropping joeys and I was surprised to read that she can carry two different aged joeys in her pouch at the same time. I guess its the kangaroo equivalent of us humans carting a hefty two year old around on one hip with a baby in the other arm.
Kangaroos are also unique in that they can suspend the development of another embryo if external conditions are harsh such as in times of drought. Being mammals they provide milk for their young and if carrying two joeys the females can produce two different sorts of milk from different teats appropriate for each joey. They are devoted mothers and extremely patient with the little roo’s attempts to find their jumping legs, these two reminded me of Kanga and Little Roo from the tales of Winnie the Pooh.
Another interesting thing about kangaroos is that they cannot walk backwards. They hop at a very high speed and their tail helps with the balance. Their tiny forelimbs have no power but the powerful hind legs with their long sharp toenails are a dangerous weapon.
