Once fully grown the Crested Tern sits between 41-52 cms. When in breeding mode, like the guy above, they grow a shaggy black crest on the crown and nape that resembles a mohawk giving them more attitude than the sleek and trim Silver Gulls. They are very common around  the mainland and Tasmanian coasts and have been known to travel up rivers some considerable distance inland.
