The Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo is a cheeky character. This male (sex identified by the hot pink eye ring) is feasting on the flower buds of the banksia tree, a tree native to where I live. Behind it is a she-oak, another native tree the cockatoos fancy. Cockatoos tend to stick together, their loud cawking sounds pre-empting their arrival, and their arrival pre-empting rain.

The black cockatoos are one of my favourite birds, this is a male Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, they are more colourful than the female with their hot pink eye ring and darker beak. They are loud and cheeky birds and a lot of fun to observe and around here favour banksia flowers/seed pods like this one, and the needles of the she-oak visible in the background.

The male Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is recognisable by the hot pink eye ring. The female is much more demure with a pale grey eye ring.
